What is a bombilla?  Pronounced bawm-bee-yah

Basically, a bombilla, is a metal straw used to sip yerba.  One end is the mouthpiece and the other end is placed in the leaves and is used as a strainer to filter out the yerba leaves.

At first the indigenous people of South America chewed the leaves of the yerba bush. Then, they created straws out of bamboo, and eventually started using different kinds of metals. The bombillas, whether bamboo, plastic or metal, seperate the infusion from the leaves. They do the opposite of a tea bag that takes the tea out of the infusion.

There is no mess with a  bombilla and one can use it for any kind of loose leaf tea. There are many types of bombillas. Some have shapes like spoons, with small holes as filters, others have have more sophisticated mechanisms, with multiple layers of filters, such as the double action bombilla. Our short deluxe bombillas weigh 1 oz and are just short of 6 inches. If you are using a regular gourd, this is the perfect size of bombilla.

We have a curated collection of stainless steel bombillas used to strain or filter the yerba mate leaves.  They are dishwasher safe and will last for years. Each one is made out of a single piece of stainless steel witch makes them able to withstand differences in temperatures and even being dropped!

Every bombilla has a different feel.  Most South Americans have several in their collections.  While these bombillas are mostly used for yerba mate, they can be used with any loose leaf tea.
